Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu did not talk to or greet each other during the parliamentary ceremony on Republic Day.
Having arrived to the venue after later than Erdoğan, Kılıçdaroğlu did not shake hands with the prime minister but simply took his place standing right next to him. The cold winds caused by the standoff between the two worsened when President of the Constitutional Court Haşim Kılıç did not greet Kılıçdaroğlu upon his arrival. Kılıç and Kılıçdaroğlu earlier exchanged strongly worded statements against each other after the former said status quo-lovers could no longer convince people, following elections at the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK). Deputy-Prime Minister Hayati Yazıcı did not shake hands with Kılıçdaroğlu at the ceremony either.
