German Minister of State at the Foreign Office Cornelia Pieper visited the temporary administration building of a newly established Turkish-German university in İstanbul on Tuesday.

Fatih District Mayor Mustafa Demir accompanied the German minister during her visit to the university’s temporary administrative offices in Sirkeci. Pieper said the Turkish government has set aside a plot in Beykoz for the university campus, and that she hopes the construction is completed quickly.

Noting that Turkey will be responsible for undertaking the construction of the campus, Pieper added that Germany will make a substantial contribution to the university’s technological infrastructure. Expressing that she was pleased to see that the necessary legal changes had been made in Parliament to make this university possible, Pieper said the university will be the biggest German university in the world outside of Germany.

“The university will be admitting its first students next year. The Higher Education Board [YÖK] will likely appoint a new president in October. Most probably, the German president, who will visit Turkey this fall, will participate in a foundation-laying ceremony for the university,” Pieper announced. She also stated that the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is currently planning on granting 12 million euros to help finance the university in its first four years.

Saying that she believes the project will be a very important contribution to cooperation between Turkey and Germany in the sphere of education, Pieper emphasized that the project has proven once more how important Turkey is for Germany. “One-fourth of the German Foreign Ministry’s budget is spent on cultural, scientific and research activities outside Germany. Turkey gets a large share,” she said.

Speaking at the university, Demir listed three high schools in which courses are taught in German, stating that the university already has a student population to draw from.
