THY, Manchester United reach sponsorship deal, report says

23 January 2010, Saturday /TODAY’S ZAMAN
Turkey’s national flag carrier Turkish Airlines (THY) has reached a sponsorship deal with British premiership soccer club Manchester United.

THY will replace Air Asia as the official carrier of the British club for the next three-and-a-half years. The agreement has been expected since anonymous sources reported last week that “the two parties were close to sealing the deal.” The BBC reported it was a multi-million pound deal but added that the club declined to release further financial details. THY and Manchester United officials are expected to sign the deal shortly. Manchester’s decision comes in the wake of recently unveiled club accounts which showed that the Red Devils, recently announced as the world’s most valuable team by Forbes, are some 716 million pounds in debt.

This is the second sponsorship deal THY has signed in a week, following a 9 million euro deal with Spanish club FC Barcelona. THY will pay some 9 million euros for the three-year Barcelona deal. THY had previously served as the official carrier for the national soccer teams of South Korea and Japan. The company currently has sponsorship deals with the four leading Turkish first-division soccer clubs.
