1 dead, 6 injured in traffic pileupANKARA A traffic accident on the state highway between Ankara and Eskişehir left one dead and six people injured on Tuesday. 

According to reports, a truck driven by Yakup Yıldız slowed when Yıldız saw another truck, driven by Yavuz Selim Başkal, overturn in the road. Raşit Yıldırım then collided with Yıldız’s truck after he was unable to stop his car in time, causing a chain reaction of accidents. Yıldız, Kerim Sal, Özer Pınarcı, Kemal Verim, Vedat İlen and Mehmet Koşar were injured, while Tamer Polat, a passenger in one of the trucks, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Eskişehir road was closed to traffic for several hours.


Engineers arrested over train collision

BİLECİK Two engineers have been arrested for their roles in the collision of two passenger trains in the northwestern province of Bilecik on Sunday, which killed the engineer of one of the trains and injured 14 other people. The engineers of the Eskişehir Express, Raşit Dikmen and Bülent Koçyiğit, were questioned for approximately 15 hours before being referred to a local court which arrested them for their failure to prevent the fatal accident. 


5 charity officials arrested for fraud

ANKARA Five charity officials were arrested on Tuesday over corrupt practices in accepting donations during the Feast of the Sacrifice, or Eid al-Adha. An Ankara courthouse ordered the arrest of 11 people who had previously been detained and then released. Five, Akif Emre Yalçınkaya, Murat Ünver, Cengiz Baştuğhan, Arif Uzun and Mustafa Sevilmiş, have been arrested so far.

Police are working to find Foundation for Children with Leukemia (LÖSEV) head Üstün Ezel, Mehmetçik Vakfı (Turkish Soldiers Foundation) General Manager Salih Güroğlu and Deniz Feneri (Lighthouse) Chairman Mehmet Cengiz, against whom arrest warrants have also been issued.


Attempted bank robbery kills 1

VAN A man employed as a janitor at a branch of Ziraat Bankası, Turkey’s largest public bank, in Van’s Çaldıran district attempted to rob the bank on Monday. After the bank closed, the man, identified by his initials as M.S.A., attacked Önder Yılmaz, a security guard at the bank, and seized his weapon. He then assailed three other bank employees, Ufuk Algun, İrfan Yürekli and Buket Özgü. Algun died at the scene. Police officers in the vicinity of the bank learned of the robbery attempt and subdued M.S.A., who was attacking the bank manager at the time. Those injured in the incident were taken to Çaldıran State Hospital.


3 die of carbon monoxide poisoning 

ERZURUM A carbon monoxide leak has taken the lives of three people in Erzurum’s Aziziye district. According to reports, Halis Eşiyok (77), his wife, Şükran Eşiyok (75), and their daughter Ayşe Süvari (40) were found dead by a relative on Monday night. An investigation carried out by emergency services showed that they died due to carbon monoxide leaking from a stove. Their bodies have been taken to Erzurum’s Atatürk University Medical Faculty Aziziye Research Hospital.
