‘Ergenekon terrorist organization exists’

16 February 2012 /NAGEHAN ALÇI
While Turkey’s political agenda has many issues to be discussed, another important development has not received enough attention: The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has reached a decision concerning chief Ergenekon defendant Tuncay Özkan, rejecting the plaintiff’s complaint that he was deprived of his right to a fair trial and saying that Özkan’s arrest is legal.

A more important point in ECtHR’s statement is that it defined Ergenekon as a “terrorist organization attempting to topple the government through the use of force.” And I wonder how some intellectual circles and media outlets will respond to this conclusion as I remember them saying there was no such organization as Ergenekon, and that they knew it for sure based on “information acquired from some Western sources.” The ECtHR statement also indicated that there is “strong evidence” for the existence of the Ergenekon clandestine terrorist organization. Let us now see what the opposition party leaders will say about all this.
