Union announces higher hunger and poverty lines in March

The poverty line, the amount that a family of four should earn monthly in order to pay its rent and meet its basic needs such as food, transportation, clothing and education, rose to TL 2,953 in March, according to data from the Turkish Public Workers’ Labor Union (Kamu-Sen).

Kamu-Sen announced the results of its monthly poverty and hunger line survey on Friday, according to which the poverty line for a family of four rose by 0.58 percent in March from the month before. The report finds that the monthly salary necessary to adequately feed a family of four, referred to as the hunger line, was TL 709. A civil servant had to spend on average 35.28 percent of his/her salary in March on rent, the report stated, based on the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) consumer and produce price indexes for March.

The poverty line for one was TL 1,470 in the third month of the year, while the hunger line, the amount one needs to spend on food for a healthy diet, rose by 0.63 percent to TL 1,123, the report stated.
