DSP’s Birgün testifies as part of Ergenekon probe
Birgün met with Ergenekon prosecutor Zekeriya Öz for three and a half hours at the Beşiktaş courthouse in İstanbul. Öz reportedly asked Birgün questions about the controversial events that took place during Ecevit’s time as prime minister and about the allegations that Ecevit was removed from office by anti-democratic forces.
A coalition government including the DSP, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the Motherland Party (ANAVATAN) collapsed in 2002 and Turkey went to early elections to select a new government. Birgün also told Öz the background of the collapse of the government.
“My goal was to inform the judiciary about what happened in 2002. The prosecutor asked me questions and I answered them to the best of my knowledge. The ball is now in the judiciary’s court,” said Birgün, without elaborating on the content of the meeting.
