Former Chief of General Staff Gen. Hilmi Özkök, who is a witness in the ongoing investigation into Ergenekon, a shadowy network charged with plotting to overthrow the government, paid a courtesy visit to current Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ on Thursday.

The meeting between Özkök and Başbuğ was announced by the General Staff on its Web site. A single file photo showing the two in front of Başbuğ’s office was also put online.

Last Saturday retired Gen. Özkök testified to public prosecutors Zekeriya Öz and Fikret Seçen as part of the ongoing Ergenekon investigation in İzmir. Stressing that it was expected of him to testify, Özkök said he spoke of what he knew objectively. “Justice is the foundation of the state. I fulfilled my duty as a witness, too,” he added, saying that he has always thought the law must be respected and trusted.

Özkök is publicly known for his commitment to democracy. It is being speculated in the media that he prevented two coup plots codenamed “Ay Işığı” (Moonlight) and “Sarı Kız” (Blonde Girl) during his term in office. The plans for those two military interventions were revealed in the diaries of retired Adm. Özden Örnek.
