After Gaza

9 February 2009, Monday /SOLI ÖZEL
On the one hand, Khaled Mashaal, a Hamas leader living in Damascus, stated last Friday that only Syria, Iran and Turkey supported Gaza during the Israeli offensive.
At a time when there are discussions over whether Turkey has turned its back to the West and when infinite absurdity circulates regarding this issue, you can evaluate Mashaal's remarks as a Middle Eastern score. On the other hand, Turkey spent two days with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who should certainly have been disturbed by Mashaal's remarks on Turkey if Turkey had been a close supporter of Hamas. In brief, Turkey is a regional power that all sides believe has an impact on the solution of problems between Palestine and Israel or among Palestinians and is a power that these sides wish to see on their side when solving problems. Furthermore, the political balance in the region is rapidly changing. And Turkey has the potential of being placed in a very different position in the new balance.
