Strong winds ripped off the roofs of several apartment buildings in the Gaziosmanpaşa, Bağcılar, Esenler, Avcılar, Küçükçek-mece, Kağıthane, Şişli, Sultanbeyli and Maltepe districts of İstanbul. Some of the detached roofs fell on nearby parked vehicles, causing small-scale property damage. There were no deaths or injuries reported. A written statement released yesterday by the Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) noted that the roofs of around 110 apartment buildings came off in the storm and that many trees were uprooted.
"Due to the strong storm with winds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour, the İstanbul Sea Buses and Fast Ferries [İDO] cancelled the Yalova-Kartal route. The Sultançiftliği-Cebeci-Mescidi Selam tramway is currently out of service as a utility pole providing energy to the tramway tipped over due to strong winds," read the statement.
Marine traffic in northwestern Çanakkale province was also affected by the storm. Officials from GESTAŞ A.Ş., a company providing sea transportation between Çanakkale and the Turkish islands in the Aegean Sea, announced that the sea traffic between Gökçeada and Kabatepe and between Gelibolu and Lapseki had been suspended due to the storm. These routes were later opened to traffic as storms eased in the Çanakkale Strait. The storm also affected sea traffic in Kocaeli, a city situated in northwestern Turkey. Marine routes between Gebze and Yalova and between Eskihisar and Topçular were closed to traffic owing to strong winds.
The State Meteorology Bureau warned that rain is forecast in the Marmara, Aegean and Black Sea regions along with the northwestern parts of central Anatolia and the western Mediterranean region for the next few days. Meteorology officials noted that drivers should slow down when navigating in heavy rain and strong winds.
