Chief of General Staff Gen. Yaşar Büyükanıt met with his British counterpart, Gen. Richard Dannet yesterday in London for talks focusing mostly on Turkey's fight against terrorism.
Aerial strikes by the Turkish military against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, under way since mid-December, were an issue on the agenda of the closed-door talks. Turkish fighter jets have carried out four strikes since Dec. 16 to hit PKK targets there, in apparent cooperation with the United States. A Turkish newspaper report said yesterday that Büyükanıt would present Turkey's concerns about the terrorist group's presence in northern Iraq and ask the British government to pressure the regional Kurdish administration in northern Iraq to do more to deal with the group. Büyükanıt was greeted by an official welcoming ceremony at Buckingham Palace. Security forces, backed by helicopters, took measures around the palace. Some 200 PKK sympathizers gathered in front of the British Mi-nistry of Defense to protest Büyükanıt's visit and call for an end to cross-border operations against the PKK.
