Police detained 10 basketball fans on Monday on charges of involvement in clashes during a wheelchair basketball match between Galatasaray and Beşiktaş RMK Marine that forced organizers to postpone the game.
The İstanbul Police Department's Public Security Branch Office examined footage of the incident and identified the fans who started the clash before detaining them.
Tensions between fans had escalated with bickering between the two teams before the match started at the Ahmet Cömert Sports Hall on Sunday. The match was postponed for half an hour after some of the fans occupied the court. Additional security forces were deployed to the sports hall to clear the court of fans and restore security in the arena.
In the 14th minute of the match, when Galatasaray was leading 31-26, tensions again flared among the fans, as they exchanged words and threw coins, pens and water bottles.
The security forces used tear gas to evacuate the fans while referees and players retreated to locker rooms. The fans damaged the building and destroyed some of the wheelchairs of the players. The tensions continued outside the sports hall and police intervened to prevent the two sides from clashing further.
Galatasaray later announced that the match has been postponed to a future date and will be resumed starting from the 14th minute.
