The leader of Hamas stood out as the most applauded foreign guest at a historic congress of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in the Turkish capital as the prime minister saluted him.

Ankara Arena sports hall, filled with 40,000 AK Party members, including party delegates, exploded in applause when Recep Tayyip Erdoğan mentioned Khaled Meshaal to salute the Hamas leader.

Shortly after he started his historic speech, where he was expected to unveil his party’s 11-year manifesto, Erdoğan listed off names of incumbent and former leaders of states, including Egypt’s President Mohammad Morsi and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Massoud Barzani.

When he mentioned Meshaal, the packed sports hall applauded him, some in standing ovation. To thank crowd for cheering, the Hamas leader stood up and greeted them.

The AK Party wants to turn the convention into a major show of solidarity among the party rank and file while luring as many as 80 foreign dignitaries.

Yemeni Nobel peace laureate Tawakul Karman and the mother and sister of Mohamed Bouazizi, the Tunisian street vendor who triggered the Arab Spring when he set himself on fire on Dec. 17, 2010, were also expected to attend Sunday's congress as guests of honor.

The congress was translated into English, French, Russian, Portuguese and Arabic for foreign participants and it was aired live outside the sports hall on a large screen for those who could not get in. Turkish TV channels also broadcast the congress live for Turkish citizens.

HAMAS is listed as a terrorist organization by Israel, the US and the EU as PKK is listed by Turkey, the US and the EU. Wouldn't it be a nice gesture if Mr Erdogan extended the same welcome to PKK leader Ocalan?

To bring terorist and give him applouds is nothing to do with rumers about Israel "sonel" you have no prove that Israel is halping the PKK. ERdogan is aginst Jews from 1974 with his antishemic play and nothing chaged.

Has it occurred to anyone why Erdogan invited the Hamas leader and why is it now that Erdogan (in recent years) is behind Hamas openly? I doubt people understand. Is it because Israel did something wrong that we don't know much about but at State level, everyone knows. We had a prelude to what Israe...

Step one: AKP cheers for terrorist leader of Hamas. Step 2: AKP tells the Europeans they don't do enough against terrorism. Step 3: AKP complains that the Europeans don't co-operate ...

Mass hysteria, populism, economic downfall....Turkey 2013. And cheering for mass murderers...this Turkey is now out Europe and will never be let in.

The article left out the part where Israel was cursed by members of the AKP when Meshall was introduced. No doubt lovers of this murdering slim look upon him as a hero because he opposes Israel. But what has he done to improve the lives of his people, while the top leadership of Hamas build villas...

You look at this spectacle and you know that this is not a ruling party of a European country in the early 20th century. The frenzy and fanatic shouts and cheering on the leader of the Hamas terrorist organization show you how distant Turkey is from Europe.

Israeli politicians will have nightmares seeing the wild popularity of Hamas amongst the AKP supporters. Looks like relations between Israel and Turkey are headed all the way to the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea.

Turkey has been and always will be a brother to the Arabs. What does Israel have to offer Turkey? Headaches, massacres of innocent Turkish humanitarian activists, arming the PKK, faulty Military equipment, a colossal obstacle to Turkeys foreign policy initiatives? Turkey is doing what is best for Tu...

What would Turks think about inviting PKK terrorist leaders to an Israeli Likud party conferece... ? Erdogan could invite more moderate PLO, but chose Meshaal the radical Jihadist.

I am sad to see that Hamas, a terror organisation is invited. Both EU and US have declared Hamas a terror organisation. How will US and EU now look upon Turkey? This is not something good for the people of Turkey.

Turkey's friend Hamas... Enough said about where Turkey is and where it is going, and it definitely does not include a better integration with the West. Turkey was the first State with Muslim majority population to recognize the State of Israel in 1949. Turkey purchase of military equipments from Israel is $10 Billion annually. "And you still have the audacity in expecting the people of Israel to apologize?". Yes, Thessalonian, we do. It is not a matter of audacity, it is a matter of decency. I wouldn't have applauded Khaled Meshaal, I disagree with the confrontational approach some people on the Mavi Marmara had, but I ex...

To be clear, true democracies around the world recognize this Hamas leader and his party as terrorists and the fact that he was the most applauded in Turkiye, is not a sign that the terrorist is respected in the least, just a sign that they are all Jew haters and that is what they were cheering, NOT...

Hamas fled from Damascus/Syria to Gaza City and now to the AKp congress of the Wahhabi-NATO supporting Erdogan. Is Hamas a phoney false staged opposition?

And who is surprised by the cheering of a terrorist within Erdogan's party?!
