UN: Somali legislator killed by gunmen

A statement by Augustine Mahiga received on Sunday said politician Mustafa Haji Maalim was killed by gunmen on Saturday. Mahiga called the shooting a cowardly attack.

Somali leaders seated a new parliament last month as part of a changeover in government. Those parliamentarians voted in a new president this month.

It wasn't immediately clear whether Maalim was killed by political rivals, criminals or insurgents. Government figures are frequently targeted for death.
