Smuggled artifacts return to Turkey

5 August 2012 /TODAY’S ZAMAN
A marble statue head and an 11-line inscribed tablet that were illegally smuggled into the United States in 1964 have been returned to Turkey.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has said in a written statement that the two historical artifacts, which are believed to date back to the time of the Roman Empire, were smuggled to the US in 1964 by an American who had been working in Turkey.

According to the ministry, the two artifacts were handed over to the Turkish Tourism Office in Washington, D.C., from which they were forwarded to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and finally given to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara, where they will be put on display.
