Friendship between people does not mean they will always agree on everything.
And people do not usually sacrifice their political views for the sake of their friendship. They might act differently even though their emotions remain the same. From this perspective, it is wrong to think that two old friends, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and President Abdullah Gül, will not compete against each other in the next presidential elections. The current strategy [of pitting themselves against each other] aims to render their political will even stronger and more efficient. Turkey is currently in an important position in the world which is undergoing a big change right now. And turning this competition into a personal “win or lose” situation instead of using this contest to aim to serve their country better will damage Turkey no matter who wins the presidential seat.
