Excavation of ancient city of Tripolis begins

19 July 2012 /TODAY’S ZAMAN
Denizli Governor Abdulkadir Demir has announced that archaeological excavations have begun at the site of the ancient city of Tripolis, with his office allocating TL 400,000 to finance the dig.

The excavations will be supervised by the museum directorate in Denizli, according to the governor. Demir said previous excavations in Tripolis were initiated in 1993, but they were interrupted for several reasons. He said the ongoing excavations are of great importance to his office. “Tripolis -- along with Laodicea and Hierapolis -- is one of the most important ancient cities in our region. A separate excavation is being carried out at Laodicea through the support of the Denizli Municipality,” he said, adding that the excavations will create sources of employment for many people in Denizli.
