Ferzan Özpetek’s film collects five trophies at Italian Globes

Özpetek was named best director and his cast members collected four acting honors in the 2012 Globo d’Oro awards, the Italian equivalent of the Golden Globes, given out annually by the Foreign Press Association in Italy.

The young lead of the film, Elio Germano, who plays a wannabe actor in Rome who works in a bakery at night in order to earn a living, won the Globo d’Oro for best actor and his fellow cast members Paola Minaccioni and Beppe Fiorello won best supporting actress and best supporting actor, respectively.

Italian actress Anna Proclemer was also honored with a special Globo d’Oro for her part in “Magnifica Presenza.” In her acceptance speech, Proclemer praised Özpetek and said he was a “magnificent director who loves his cast members and gets along great with them,” the Anatolia news agency reported.

The Globo d’Oro for best film went to veteran Italian director Giuliano Montaldo’s latest film, “L’industriale” (The Industrialist).

On Saturday, “Magnifica Presenza,” Özpetek’s ninth feature, also won two awards -- for best costume design and best subject -- in the Italian film critics association’s 66th Nastro d’Argento (Silver Ribbon) movie awards. The film premiered in Rome in late March and was released in Turkish theaters in April.
