Blue and yellow consciences

4 July 2012 /GÜLAY GÖKTÜRK BUGÜN
I have previously written that the Turkish idiom of “Takım tutar gibi” (just like supporting a team), meaning that one fully commits to and supports his team without question, can be used for our commitment to politics or ideologies.

Yet, in a democratic society, people are expected not to support their political party or ideologies like they support their teams; instead, they are supposed to maintain their ability to think critically. This was very important in the match-fixing case. And yet, when Fenerbahçe Chairman Aziz Yıldırım was released from jail and received with hero’s welcome by Fenerbahçe fans, I thought all these warnings were in vain. Seeing Yıldırım carried on the shoulders of people toting Turkish flags was an indication that he is now regarded as a national symbol, which is a mask they want to put on Yıldırım to cover their own embarrassment.
