The Republican People’s Party (CHP) has been preparing for its next congress more silently than ever. What can this silence mean, as we know the party experiences such tension and harsh disputes before every party congress that it cannot find time to do politics?
Does it signal that opposition within the party has come to an end? there are still nationalist and Kemalist members within the party worried that secularism in the country is threatened by the government, and there are those who still defend the Ergenekon terrorist organization. Yet all of these positions do not change the fact that CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu is the most powerful and influential figure in the party. By making smart political moves in addition to the power he already wields, such as taking the initiative for talks on the Kurdish problem, Kılıçdaroğlu has received increasing support and trust within his party.
