Prosecutors: No al-Qaeda link to France gunman

20 June 2012 /AP
Prosecutors are dismissing any al-Qaeda connection to a gunman who took four people hostage Wednesday in a bank in Toulouse before being captured in a raid six hours later.

French media had reported that the gunman claimed he was acting on behalf of al-Qaeda. But prosecutors linked his act to previous psychological problems.

"I am not a doctor," said prosecutor Michel Valet, "but we have objective elements that allow us to think and affirm that we're dealing with someone who suffers from considerable psychological problems and that his act is linked to these problems."

Valet said the suspect, who claimed he was acting for religious reasons, had confused religious views.
