Krek, founded by the young acclaimed playwright, stage director and actor Berkun Oya, is one of two Turkish companies participating in Theatre Biennale’s New Plays from Europe, along with the İstanbul Municipal Theater, who will be presenting “Sûrname 2010.”
Turkey is one of the 25 countries that will be represented at the 2012 Theatre Biennale, which runs from June 14-24 and will present 31 new plays.
Krek will be staged, in its original Turkish, on June 19 at 9:30 p.m. in the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, the Santralistanbul-based theater company said in a written statement on Thursday.
Starring Bartu Küçükçağlayan, Ozan Çelik, Öykü Karayel and Tülin Özen, Krek’s award-winning “Güzel Şeyler Bizim Tarafta” follows a modern İstanbul couple whose apartment is invaded by a couple from rural Anatolia seeking refuge from their vengeful relatives.
Billed by its organizers as the “only large-scale international festival dedicated exclusively to productions of contemporary plays in their original languages,” Theatre Biennale’s New Plays from Europe emphasizes on authors and their scripts. All plays in the festival are presented with a simultaneous translation to German.
This is the second time the 35-year-old Oya is taking part in New Plays From Europe, where he made his international debut in 2006 with “Fire Prayer.”
