Abdulbaset Sieda said the SNC appreciated the efforts of UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Kofi Annan and underlined the importance of the continuation of international efforts to end President Bashar al-Assad's regime. “We thank our brothers in Turkey for standing by our people during the revolution, their endeavors and accepting our refugees as guests,” Sieda told a press conference in İstanbul.
Sieda has called on the Syrian and Chinese governments to join the international community's efforts and asked the Iranian administration to respect the Syrian people's will. Moreover, Sieda said Assad's administration has lost all legitimacy across the country due to its oppressive policies in the past year.
“The administration is only hunting people in streets in metropolises, and we believe that it has reached the end and, therefore, it will become more aggressive,” Sieda told an Anatolia news agency correspondent after the press conference. Sieda also said Assad's administration should understand that it has no other choice than to abide by international decisions.
Born in 1956 in the city of al-Hasakah, Syria, a predominantly Kurdish area, Sieda was elected chairman of the SNC after Burhan Ghalioun resigned.
