Turkish press review

1 June 2012 /THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY
On Friday Turkish dailies covered a Turkish football player's signing with Atletico Madrid and statements by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan about Syria.

Several newspapers covered reports that Turkish soccer player Emre Belozoğlu has signed a two-year contract with Spain's Atletico Madrid for 5 million euros. Belozoğlu's said he was happy to play on the same team as Arda Turan, another Turkish football player.

Another topic the dailies reported on was Davutoğlu's statements about Syria. Davutoğlu said, “We have information that Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad is using PKK elements against his own people.” He added that what would escalate security risks in Turkey would be increased chaos in Syria.

Newspapers also reported on Erdoğan's speech during the Partners Forum for the UN Alliance of Civilizations. Erdoğan said, “The innocent children who were killed in Houla are our children, too.” He added that supporting the cruel meant supporting cruelty. Erdoğan also met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Ban told Erdoğan that there was an ongoing civil war in Syria and that the UN was concerned that the violence would spread to neighboring countries like Lebanon. Ban added that those who committed the Houla massacre should pay the price.
