The incident came amidst ongoing violence against healthcare providers in hospitals across Turkey. Zekeriya Kanat, 35, tried to strangle Dr. Nilgün Eroğlu at the Kahramanmaraş Maternity and Child Diseases Hospital, where the baby was undergoing treatment, when Eroğlu informed the father of the baby’s death.
Reports said the baby was taken to the hospital on April 30 where it was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. The baby was then taken to the intensive care unit when its condition worsened.
A hospital security guard who tried to intervene was also punched in the face and had his nose broken. Kanat was detained after the incident and later released pending trial. The doctor and the security guard went to Necip Fazıl Kısakürek City Hospital’s emergency room for treatment. Kahramanmaraş Provincial Health Directorate head İlker Çitil visited the victims of the attack in the hospital.
After she underwent treatment at the hospital, Eroğlu filed a criminal complaint at the Kahramanmaraş Courthouse.
