Silent Rahşan Ecevit

25 May 2012 /MAHMUT ÖVÜR
Turkey has since 2002 been discussing the period when former Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit was hospitalized in Başkent Hospital. Ecevit’s ex-bodyguard Recai Birgün has brought the discussion to the public once again.

He appeared at a court hearing of a probe looking into the Ergenekon terrorist organization, repeating the same thing he has been saying since 2002. He says there was a plot to bring down the Ecevit government and that the doctors did not take good care of Ecevit at the hospital. As a matter of fact, everyone close to Ecevit knows this. So, why are they not speaking out? No one can claim that Birgün has made any personal gains out of his testimony. However, apparently the people who remain silent have their reasons or perhaps make gains for keeping silent. Birgün told me that Ecevit’s wife, Rahşan Ecevit, was extremely worried about her husband’s life at the time. Birgün said he would expect her to talk about the danger Ecevit was in, but she has remained silent, saying it is the state’s job to bring to light the plots against Ecevit. True justice will be served only when those being silent start talking.
