CHP heads toward showdown in İstanbul

11 May 2012 /HABİB GÜLER
The Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) İstanbul branch will hold a provincial congress on Sunday, May 13, and the race to lead the İstanbul branch will see a major showdown between CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and his former right-hand man Gürsel Tekin.

The CHP headquarters in Ankara is supporting candidate Oğuz Kaan Salıcı, while Tekin, a former İstanbul branch head who is still believed to wield influence over the branch and possibly a potential rival to Kılıçdaroğlu’s leadership, supports Ali Özcan. However, insiders note that Salıcı is more likely to win. Kılıçdaroğlu is set to make a speech during the congress, but he will not be hinting at his support for either one of the candidates.
