Salih Kuru, one of the last people to who experienced the Turkish War of Independence, died on Thursday in the hospital where he had been receiving treatment.
Kuru was treated and remained in intensive care at Kastamonu’s private İsfendiyar Anadolu Hospital for three days before his condition deteriorated, according to the Anatolia news agency.
He lived during the War of Independence and transported weapons in an oxcart together with his grandfather from İnebolu to Çankırı. Kuru spoke with Anatolia before his death about the War of Independence. “In those days, when I was 5, a military delegation came by to take away the best horses and oxen of the people to later use to transport arms as part of the war effort.” Kuru also mentioned a woman named Şerife. She had apparently died due to harsh weather conditions while the war was raging. Kuru said Şerife died after taking off some of her clothes to cover the weapons in order to protect them. Her desire to help in the only way she could during the war led her to freeze to death.
