Supporters of the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) attacked the Zaman daily's offices in Paris and Cologne on Wednesday, threatening newspaper staff and causing material damage to the buildings.

A group of nearly 15 PKK supporters wearing masks attacked Zaman's Paris office on Wednesday afternoon. They threatened 17 employees who were in the office, breaking windows, damaging furniture, televisions and computers in the building. Some sections of the building were reportedly unusable.

French authorities have launched an investigation into the attack. Turkey’s ambassador to Paris, Tahsin Burcuoğlu, paid a visit to the office in the wake of the attack and complained about the negligence of French police.

“It is clear that the fact that those responsible for this are left unpunished encourages the terrorist organization to stage new attacks. The attack today once again proves this. It is naturally the responsibility of the French state to provide peace and security for Turks living in France,” the ambassador said.

Zaman Paris representative Emre Demir said the attack is the third in the past six months. “We were attacked three times in the past six months. Although we demanded police protection several times we were not provided with guards. The main reason behind these attacks on press freedom in France is the fact that those responsible for these attacks are not punished. The latest attack not only caused material damage but threatened the lives of our staff,” he said.

Zaman’s offices in Cologne were also attacked by PKK supporters on Wednesday night when a pro-PKK group threw Molotov cocktails at the Zaman building. German police detained two people on suspected links to the attack.

Zaman offices in Europe target of PKK

Zaman’s offices in Europe have in recent months become a frequent target for the PKK. The daily’s Paris office was most recently attacked by PKK supporters on Aug. 16, 2011 and on Oct. 6, 2011.

In the October attack, a group of 25-30 PKK supporters forced their way into the office after the paper’s employees had finished their shift. The PKK supporters then attacked two Zaman personnel who were in the building at the time of the incident. The group also put up posters of imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and other posters in support of the PKK on the walls of the office.

Paris is not the sole European capital where Zaman offices have been attacked by PKK supporters. On Oct. 18 of last year, Zaman’s Vienna office was partially occupied by a pro-PKK group while Molotov cocktails were thrown at the paper’s London office on Oct. 30. In the most recent incident, PKK supporters attacked Zaman’s offices in Zurich.

migo, you are a buffoon. It's not even remotely similar. First, Turkiye doesn't monetarily or militarily support there groups like Iran and Russia (who you never say anything about strangely). The US and israel have done so for kuridsh terrorists. Second, israel is actually more like the pkk sup...

tommy, what reason is there for the army to purposely waste ammunition on some smugglers? Why these 30 smugglers? Why would they suddenly want to randomly kill 30 kurds? If they did want to suddenly randomly kill 30 kurds, aren't there far more subtle ways of doing so? These are the questions pe...

David, there is no such thing as "the kurdish national liberation struggle". You are supporter of the fraud known as kurdish nationalism and terrorism and a boob and therefore it is with great satisfaction that I have owned you many a time in these comments sections. Whether or not you think Hamas...

@yabanki I am definitely woith you! But it might still be a good lesson to Turkey how it feels to be threatened by terrorists even abroad and might bring her off from supporting groups, which commit terrorist actions to other countries, especially when it is none of her business!

Why is Germany letting terrorists and terrorist supporters roam their streets, causing havoc? Something seems very strange about this situation.

The supporters of PKK inside and outside of Turkey believe only in violence to achieve their rights. They do not believe in democracy. Their violent actions must be suppressed with severe punishment. Because, violence has no place in any democracy.

Zaman Newspaper is the contrast of terrorism because it is the voice of peace and brotherhood..

This can be a newspapers front page in Europe as The Passion of France, Germany and Belgium. They do have Frontiers when it comes for Turkish life. Because those nations allow terrorist breedings on it's soil. That's pretty obvious. And tommorow the same leaders of the day(the reborn Roman Empire si...

Why is PKK attacking Zaman? The Gulen movement do want rights for Turkeys kurdish population, their media and writers have a liberal stance when it comes to the kurdish issue. The movement want kurdish education and even own a private TV channel broadcasting in kurdish. PKK is fascism and they DO...

PKK is a Terrorist Organization, that targets innocent people.

Today's Zaman never misses an opportunity to dub PKK and the Kurdish National Liberation struggle as terrorist and terrorism. Yet it never refers to Hamas as a terrorist outfit even though like PKK Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by US and the EU among others. I do not condone violence o...

I hope Denmark is watching, because if anyone petrol bombed a Danish Organiation in Turkey they would summons the Turkish ambassador immediately.

Thankgod no one was hurt, another good reason for Europeans to witness what scum the PKK is.

In simple terms, this is payback for Turkey's attempts to shut down ROJ TV. Rather unfairly, Zaman is seen as parastatal, and this means that it will be retaliated against for Turkish policy by Kurdish political movements of all sorts. Unfortunately, this sort of violence is nonconstructive and se...

This is sad. Kurds do have a justified cause and the best response to the libel of the Turkish press is to be smart and honest, as we believe el-heqqu ye'lu the truth will always prevail. Yes, just be righteous and let them worry about things.

It goes without saying that if it were the offices of the PKK attacked, the german and french police would passionately jump into action. Regardless, Turkiye should consider such a path of action. Why is it that Turkiye's secret services have not carried out attacks on PKK targets living in Europe...

This outrageous attack is a proof that Zaman group is an honest media organization. We need better surveillance of this terrorist group's activities across Europe, particularly in Germany, France, UK, Belgium and Sweden.
