Nine films in running for awards at Nuremberg Turkish-German fest

8 February 2012 / ,
Five films from Germany and four from Turkey are in the running for awards in next month’s Nuremberg Turkish-German Film Festival, the event’s organizers announced this week.

Recent festival favorites “Can,” director Raşit Çelikezer’s Sundance prize-winning sophomore feature; and “Zenne” (Zenne Dancer), co-directors M. Caner Alper and Mehmet Binay’s debut effort that is based on the true story of Ahmet Yıldız, the victim of Turkey’s first “gay honor killing,” which both had their Turkish premieres at last October’s Altın Portakal (Golden Orange) Film Festival in Antalya, are two of the Turkish titles to be offered in the Nuremberg festival’s competitive section.

Veteran Turkish-Cypriot filmmaker Derviş Zaim’s critically acclaimed “Gölgeler ve Suretler” (Shadows and Faces), about the violence-filled recent history of his homeland; and “Lal Gece” (Night of Silence), the fifth feature by director Reis Çelik, which is set for its first German outing this month at the Berlin Film Festival’s Generation 14plus competition, make up the other two Turkish entrants on the bill.

German female filmmaker Emily Atef’s 2011 film “Töte Mich” (Kill Me), Moscow-born German Leo Khasin’s debut feature “Kaddisch für einen Freund” (Kaddish for a Friend), Albanian-born German short film maker Enkelejd Lluca’s first feature “Frankfurt Coincidences,” Anja Jacobs’ 2012 film “Einer wie Bruno” (Baby Daddy) and Christian Petzold’s newest film “Barbara,” which will compete in this year’s Berlinale, are the five German titles running in Nuremberg.

The films will run for awards in three categories -- best film, best actor and best actress -- and will be evaluated by a five-member jury that will include Turkish screen and stage actress Melisa Sözen and journalist Ece Temelkuran. The Nuremberg Turkish-German Film Festival will mark its 17th edition from March 1-11 in the city of Nuremberg in the German state of Bavaria. İstanbul Today’s Zaman
