“Turandot,” the Italian composer’s unfinished last opera he was working on before his death in 1924, will have its İzmir premiere on Saturday, the Anatolia news agency reported on Tuesday.
Based on a well-known ancient Persian fairy tale, “Turandot” tells the story of a Tartar prince who falls in love with a cruel Chinese princess.
The new production is directed by renowned Turkish opera director Aytaç Manizade and features a rotating cast of three İzmir opera singers, including Aytül Büyüksaraç, İZDOB’s director, in the role of Princess Turandot. Manizade, famous for her minimalist takes on grand works of the world opera repertoire, and İZDOB have been working for the past 12 months on the production, Anatolia reported.
İZDOB will also stage the new production in June in the southern city of Antalya as the opening piece of this year’s Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival, Büyüksaraç told reporters during a news conference in İzmir on Tuesday.
Manizade, also speaking at Tuesday’s news conference, told reporters she believed “İzmir’s opera-goers [on Saturday] will watch a performance through which they will see the level of success İZDOB has reached in the 30 years since its founding, which will make them proud.”
The orchestra will be conducted by maestros Tulio Gagliardo Varas and Alessandro Cedrone in the three-act opera, where sopranos Seda Ortaç and Ayşe Tek will join Büyüksaraç in the rotating cast in the role of Turandot and the role of Prince Calaf will be sung by tenors Lorenzo Mock, Levent Gündüz and Efe Kışlalı.
Saturday’s gala performance is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the A. Adnan Saygun Art Center. İZDOB will stage “Turandot” once more in February, on the 13th. Other performances of the piece this season are scheduled for March 31, April 2, and May 5 and 7.
