Industrial production up by nearly 9 percent in 2011

8 February 2012 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Industrial production increased by 8.9 percent in 2011 compared to the previous year, the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) announced on Wednesday.

The official statistics body noted the increase in Turkey's industrial production was some 3.7 percent in December of last year.

Turkey's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 9.6 percent in the first three quarters of last year, following an expansion of 9 percent across all four quarters of 2010. The figures for industrial production, along with a number of other indicators, suggested overall growth of no less than 8 percent last year.

The government has predicted the national economy will expand by 4 percent this year, but international observers, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, predict lower growth rates for 2012.
