Water levels in the Tunca and Meriç rivers, which run through the northwestern province of Edirne, rose after a dam in neighboring Bulgaria was damaged due to heavy snowfall and water from the two rives has begun to overflow, Turkish authorities said Monday.

Edirne Governor Gökhan Sözer told reporters that parts of these two rivers in Bulgaria have already overflowed and flooded certain areas, estimating that the two rivers may also overflow on the Turkish side of the border by about 8 p.m.

“We are monitoring water levels. If we notice any risk, we will order evacuation of areas in danger of flooding,” he said, adding that these areas are not densely populated. He also stated that there are not many homes in the area, but that some restaurants and cafes in the area may be flooded.

“There is no serious threat to the city center,” he added.
