BDP takes Uludere incident to International Criminal Court

27 January 2012 / HABİB GÜLER, ANKARA
The Pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) has petitioned the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague for an objective investigation into who holds responsibility for the Uludere incident, the party's deputy group chairman Hasip Kaplan announced on Friday.

Speaking at a news conference, Kaplan said the BDP had approached the ICC over the incident, in which the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) mistakenly launched an airstrike on a group of 34 civilians who were smuggling goods across Turkey's Iraqi border on Dec. 28, after identifying them as PKK terrorists.

The government later acknowledged that the victims were smugglers, not terrorists. The military issued a statement saying the warplanes had targeted the group based on intelligence that suggested a group of armed terrorists would be heading towards the Turkish border to stage attacks on the military.

Kaplan said the petition made to the ICC carried the signatures of BDP co-chairmen Selahattin Demirtaş and Gültan Kışanak.

At the press conference, Kaplan presented a copy of the photos, official records, political statements, news articles and autopsy reports of the victims, as well as information on their personal backgrounds, which were being handed to the ICC.

The BDP's petition also includes heavy criticisms of the Turkish judicial system, saying that only the international court can reveal those behind the incident.

The incident is described as a “massacre” in the BDP petition.

Uludere report is to be completed in 30 days

The investigation into the Uludere incident, in which 34 civilians were killed by a Turkish airstrike in late December as a result of false intelligence, will be presented to authorities in 30 days.

The investigation into the Uludere incident is being conducted by two chief inspectors appointed by the Interior Ministry and a colonel appointed by the Gendarmerie General Command. (JGK) They will complete the investigation and submit a report to the Presidency of the State Inspection within the next 30 days.

Gülyazı Border Regiment Deputy Commander Col. Hüseyin Onur Güney, who was removed from his post following the incident, has been appointed to a position in western Turkey.

Emine Erdoğan and deputies' spouses visit Uludere victims' mothers

Emine Erdoğan, the wife of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Family and Social Policy Minister Fatma Şahin, Deputy Prime Minister Beşir Atalay's wife Yıldız Atalay and a number of deputies' spouses will meet grieving mothers of Uludere victims to express their sympathy and sorrow in the upcoming days.

Although the group was planning to go to Uludere on Wednesday, the day after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that the families of the victims were to be paid TL 123,000 each in compensation, they were forced to delay the visit due to the adverse weather conditions.

Interior Minister Beşir Atalay confirmed the planned visit and said: “We are not neglecting families of the Uludere victims and we will not. While the investigations are ongoing, we will continue to give moral support.”

Disgusting that BDP takes advantage of this horrible accident. These people have no honour or respect. PKK is never going to win how much propaganda it spreads. You have to kill every Turk to achieve that.

BDP is right to do this, the turkish state unashamedely thinks it can give money to the people and forget what happened. Killing 35 young people is not a small thing in the 21st century. I am afraid turks are blind when it comes to their actions and this will drive a rift betwen kurds and turks in t...
