CHP member lapses into coma in Paris

26 January 2012 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Ekrem Kerem Oktay, the youngest member of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Party Council, who had run for a seat in Parliament in the general elections last year but lost, fell into a coma in Paris on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old politician had gone to Paris with a delegation including Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) President Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu to lobby against a French bill that would make it a crime to deny that the killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks nearly a century ago constituted genocide. The bill, passed in the French Senate on Monday night, sets a punishment of up to one year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros for those who deny or “outrageously minimize” such events.

According to reports, Oktay fainted during a meeting in Paris and was hospitalized. Doctors said he fell into a coma due to a brain-related problem. Hisarcıklıoğlu said Oktay is still in the hospital due to a high fever, and an ambulance plane is standing by to bring him back to Turkey; however, French doctors said it would be dangerous for Oktay to be moved at the present time.
