The forecast said the effects of a cold front moving in from the Balkans would see a freeze set in over İstanbul. Following considerable disruption to transport systems caused by snow early last week, 870 heavy vehicles and 142 snow plows have been dedicated to clearing roads, and 2,406 workers will be working toward ensuring roads and other transport routes remain clear. In addition, 127,311 tons of grit salt has been made available to be distributed on icy roads and pavements.
Daily life was paralyzed last week when hundreds of travelers and vehicles were stuck in traffic due to heavy snowfall. Hospitals and the fire service are also putting emergency teams on standby in preparation for snow-related accidents. The fire service will dedicate 135 personnel and 45 fire engines to alleviating any problems.
Pedestrians and drivers alike have been warned by the municipality to be vigilant and careful on the streets if heavy snowfall occurs. Emergency teams have been readied for busy urban and transport centers, and İstanbul’s various provinces have been divided into nine groups, each of which will have a specific team of emergency workers working toward lessening the impact of the snow as much as possible.
