Court rejects case filed by Erdoğan against MHP’s Vural

26 January 2012 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
An Ankara court on Thursday rejected a case filed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan against Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) parliamentary group deputy chairman Oktay Vural after he slandered the prime minister.

Erdoğan filed a libel suit against Vural over the offensive remarks he made about him to a news agency in 2009, which Erdoğan’s lawyers claimed exceeded the limits of freedom of expression.

Erdoğan won TL 3,000 in compensation from Vural at a trial heard by the Ankara 3rd Court of First Instance; however, the Supreme Court of Appeals overturned the court’s ruling on March 14, 2011.

At Thursday’s hearing at the Ankara 3rd Court of First Instance, judge Vedat Yıldırım complied with the Supreme Court of Appeals’ ruling and rejected the case.

Erdoğan was demanding TL 50,000 in compensation from Vural.
