A father whose son was dismissed from military school is to tell the president at the Çankaya presidential palace about the difficulties military students experience after they are expelled from military colleges, academies and high schools.

At the beginning of this year, an initiative called “Ask the President” was put into practice on the official website of the Presidency. Under the initiative, those who ask the most popular questions are invited to the presidential palace to ask their questions directly to President Abdullah Gül.

Musa Taş’s question concerning students dismissed from military academies was the fifth most popular question in January, with a total of 220,377 likes, and in the upcoming days he will meet Gül at the Çankaya presidential palace, where he will have the opportunity to ask his question. He is expected to talk about how expelled students are deprived of a bright future and required to pay an excessive penalty.

The chairman of the Platform for Military Students Dismissed from the Turkish Armed Forces, Tuğrul Yıldırım, said the meeting is a source of hope for victimized military students. He added that this problem is a bleeding wound for Turkey, to which an immediate solution should be offered.

Yıldırım and four of his friends who were discharged last year from the Air Force Academy established the Platform for Military Students Dismissed from the Turkish Armed Forces on behalf of 2,190 military students who have been dismissed from military schools for various reasons.

According to Yıldırım, certain students are bestowed privileges in orientation training programs, while others are subjected to various forms of torture and psychological pressure under the name of training in military academies. “Those students who are dismissed from military academies on bogus charges are punished and fined up to TL 50,000. Unable to pay this penalty, they have to leave education and work to pay it off.” Yıldırım stated.

The parliamentary Petition Committee has launched an investigation into bullying at military academies and the unfair fines dismissed military students must pay.

Yıldırım and his friends have submitted videos to the committee concerning the problems they have experienced. In the upcoming days, executives of the Platform for Military Students Dismissed from the Turkish Armed Forces will also have the opportunity to relay their problems directly to Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) officials in the committee.
