Retired police chief: Men not solely to blame for murders of women

Retired police chief Dr. Hasan Yağar, in an article in Çağın Polisi Dergisi (Contemporary Police Magazine), argued that the blame for Turkey's ongoing murders of women cannot be placed on male offenders alone. Women, who provoke men with their behavior and speech, are also at fault, Yağar said.

In his “Panoramic Anatomy of Murders of Women” article that appeared in the magazine's January issue, Yağar said, “The sin of the murders cannot be placed solely on the men [who committed them]," the Milliyet daily reported on Wednesday.

It is no coincidence that the murders of women are not occurring in the more religious regions of Turkey, the retired police chief argued. “Almost all of these murders are taking place in mega-cities. These heart-wrenching events are not taking place in our beautiful Anatolian villages and hamlets but rather in large cities,” wrote Yağar.

Women may be inferior to men in physical strength, but the same cannot be said for their behavior and speech, Yağar said. Women provoke men to commit murders, which then cost the male offenders their futures, he argued.

Latest comment made out of ignorance. Muslim traditions do not call for rapes and murders. Muslim traditions do not give men to keep their women under cover and have the licence to rape other women. Please do not bring a bad reputation to the Islamic culture by your ignorant comment. Early Muslim t...

What a sick way of looking at this. And by the way, could it be that religious men from Anatolia kill their wives in mega cities because they cannot dominate and control them as they used to in their villages?

I cannot believe that I am ready such comments in this day and age. What an utter outrage in the age-old fight to bring enlightenment to the men in violence against women. Firstly, it does not matter if a woman is walking down the street cloathed in her own nakedness, alone - each person is respons...

The Prophet (saw) said "the best noble man is best noble towards his family/women, none but an ignoble/debased man treats women disgracefully."

Disgraceful to hear from a former Police Chief.Only immature weak men can blame their actions on "provocation by women". What chance do women in Turkey have of being treated respectfully.I hope women in Turkey will not let this go by quietly and he has just reconfirmed the fact that religion suppre...

Hasan Yağar may have a DR in front of his name, but he is still a very ignorant man. He is a symbol of failure of Turkish education system which gave him a DR but no inteligence.

I suppose then the good chief would agree that the speech and behavior of a man might provoke a woman to kill him, and that would also be justified...? This man has disgraced his profession.

Welcome to the Middle Eastern misogynistic mentality! Can you imagine how thoroughly this guy's teams investigated such murders? Reminds me of justifications made for honour killings...

Men like Yagar are actually a big part of the problem. In the real world, there is no such thing as "provocation for murder," nor is there any verbal provocation for physical abuse. No excuses, no justifications! These men really need to be educated! The women need to be taught to leave immediat...

What a shameful comment by the ex-police chief. Murderers and rapist are innocent, the fault lies with the victim to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. The Goverment should stop his pension immediately. Turkish people should realise the degree of securitythey enjoyed this ex-police chief.

What a pathetic comment to blame women for their own murders. You people, your society and the men especially, go crazy when they believe they have been disrespected. Look at Erdogan, he behaves in same manner, with unbelievable level of anger, rage

Nice to know that even at retirement age, men are still not taking responsibility and even go so far as to make ridiculous statements.
