‘Van Gogh Alive’ set for two Turkey showings in 2012

23 January 2012 / TODAY’S ZAMAN , İSTANBUL
“Van Gogh Alive,” an international traveling exhibition that presents the life and work of the 19th-century Dutch artist in a novel perspective, will come to Turkey this year for two showcases, first in İstanbul and later in Ankara, the event’s Turkish sponsors announced on Monday.

Put together by the Australia-based Grande Exhibitions, the exhibition makes use of new technology to present a selection of Vincent van Gogh’s (1853-1890) masterpieces in a specially designed choreography enriched with light and sound effects.

Billed as a striking fusion of art and technology, “Van Gogh Alive” is brought to Turkey by the pharmaceutical company Abdi İbrahim, which announced the show’s Turkey presentations in a written statement on Monday.

The exhibition will open Feb. 10 in İstanbul’s Antrepo 3 exhibit space in the Karaköy quarter, where it will remain on display until May 15. From there, it will travel to the Turkish capital for a month-and-a-half display from Oct. 15-Dec. 30 at the Cer Modern museum, the company said in the statement. The exhibit’s Turkey run comes as part of events marking Abdi İbrahim’s 100th anniversary.

“Van Gogh Alive” features over 3,000 digital images of van Gogh’s works from the period between 1880 and 1890, presented in a chronological order through 40 high-definition projectors, accompanied by digital surround sound.

Among well-known van Gogh works presented in the show are “Café Terrace at Night,” “The Red Vineyard,” “Chair and Pipe,” “Self-portrait with a Bandaged Ear,” “Vase with Twelve Sunflowers,” “Starry Night over The Rhone” and “Wheatfield with Crows,” among others.
