Salehi denies reports Iran sent forces to terrorize Turkey

19 January 2012 / HASAN BOZKURT , ANKARA
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has denied and condemned reports that Iran might have sent a team from the Quds Force, a special unit within the Revolutionary Guard, to carry out bombings in Turkey, saying the news was fabricated by those unhappy with the ties between the two countries.

“What would Iran gain out of that?” Salehi rhetorically asked in a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart in Ankara on Thursday. He also said Turkey and Iran were in close contact and such an act would benefit nobody in Iran. The Iranian Embassy in Ankara also made a statement regarding the same speculations. “Zionist and interventionist states are not happy with the close relationship between Iran and its friend and brother, Turkey,” the announcement stated on Thursday, accusing certain circles without elaborating on their identities that “they would do anything to disrupt this relationship.”

“What is pleasing is that the authorities of both countries are well aware of the situation, and the permanent bilateral relations and the frequent visits by senior level delegations within the last few weeks are signs of the cooperation between the countries,” the statement read, referring to the large number of visits made by both Iranian officials and their Turkish counterparts, reasons for which have not been publicized by either country in detail.

Two days ago, news of the arrival of a Quds Force team hit the Turkish media when a message sent by Turkey’s National Police Department to police departments across the country issued a warning that an armed attack could be carried out by the force, probably targeting US missions in the country.
