Abdurrahman Çelik, director of copyrights at the Culture and Tourism Ministry, told Today's Zaman that the ministry conducted the study to determine the developments and pros and cons in the TV sector.
Though he said they were already aware of Turkish TV programs' returns in the global market, Çelik said the Culture and Tourism Ministry sat down with the Industry Ministry and the Finance Ministry to discuss what more can be done to expand the global reach of Turkish television series and determined that accurate data were needed. This is the reason that the Culture and Tourism Ministry decided to study the market for Turkish TV programs abroad, said Çelik.
For the first time in 2011, Turkish TV programs were sold to countries outside the Middle East, including New Caledonia, Niger, Vietnam, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Somalia, Singapore and some Balkan countries.
Israel and Greece were also among the countries that bought Turkish TV programs for broadcast. Turkish TV series in Greece are broadcast in Turkish with Greek subtitles. One in every two Greek citizens watches Turkish TV programs. Meanwhile, the number of Turkish language courses in Greece has increased from one to 10.
The study found that the best-selling Turkish TV series was “Valley of the Wolves.”
Çelik said there has been a significant increase in interest in Turkey from countries that bought Turkish TV series. According to the study, the number of tourists from these countries to Turkey increased on average by 12 percent within the five-year period.
Çelik said the ministry aims to expand Turkish TV series to Europe and the United States.
