“I was ashamed to be human as I listened to the prime minister's speech,” Demirtaş said during a parliamentary group meeting on Tuesday.
While addressing his Justice and Development Party (AK Party) deputies in Parliament Tuesday, Erdoğan accused the BDP of trying to handle the issue with an ethnicity-based approach.
“You cannot cover up this issue by shouting at the BDP. … You are targeting the BDP at a time when 35 people were massacred, as if it was the BDP that ordered the warplanes to take off,” Demirtaş said, referring to Erdoğan.
Last Wednesday night, 35 people were mistakenly killed by Turkish warplanes after the military mistook the victims for Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) members. The government, which acknowledges the victims were smugglers rather than terrorists, vowed on Monday to pay compensation to the families of the victims. The military said in statement earlier that the warplanes had targeted the group based on intelligence that suggested a group of weapon-carrying terrorists were heading towards the Turkish border to stage attacks on the military.
