Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has undergone a surgery and is in good health, a statement from the Prime Ministry said on Monday.

The statement said the prime minister underwent a “successful laparoscopic surgery on his digestive system” on Saturday. “He is in good health and will soon be able to resume his duties after a period of rest advised by his doctors,” the statement said.

Erdoğan, 57, underwent the operation at the İstanbul Marmara University Hospital, media reports said.

Erdoğan, whose Justice and Development Party (AK Party) won a third consecutive term in an election in June, is by far Turkey's most influential politician.

Under his rule, the overwhelmingly Muslim country has become one of the world's fastest growing economies and a powerhouse in the region.

There is speculation that Erdoğan wants to move Turkey to a presidential system of government, with the intention of becoming president himself, as under AK Party rules he cannot serve as prime minister for more than three terms.
