Officials say used clothes not to be given to quake victims

3 November 2011 / MUSTAFA TURAN, VAN
On the orders of government officials, second-hand clothes sent from across Turkey to people in quake-stricken Van are not to be handed out to prevent provocation from supporters of the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

The Van Governor's Office on Wednesday decided to stop vehicles carrying used clothes from entering the city of Erciş after sympathizers of the terrorist PKK said Turks think people in the predominantly Kurdish province of Van only deserve used clothes. Officials also stated that used clothes received in the past week will be kept in storage.

Roughly 150 trucks loaded with aid are sent from all parts of Turkey to the eastern province every day. Some of the aid containers include used clothes, which are being kept in the storerooms of a sugar factory. Deputy Prime Minister Beşir Atalay had previously asked people not to send used clothes when sending aid to Van, stating that the people in Van deserve new clothes.

Since the powerful earthquake hit Van on Oct. 23, the benevolent people of Turkey have sent 12 18-wheeler trailers, 125 trucks and 171 vans full of food, clothes and heaters.
