Runner-up party hopes Tunisia, Turkey will boost relations

30 October 2011 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
The leader of the runner-up in Tunisia's first democratic elections, held last week, said on Sunday that Tunisia will work to improve relations with Turkey in the future, according to an Anatolia news agency report.

Congress for the Republic (CPR) leader Moncef Marzouki said Tunisians have great respect for Turkey. “Turkey is a good model as it preserves its national identity and culture while at the same time realizing great democratic and economic achievements," Marzouki told Anatolia.

Marzouki expressed hope that Turkey and Tunisia, as two Mediterranean countries, will boost their economic and cultural relations in the future.

The CPR party, founded in 2001, won 13.82 percent of the vote, thus acquiring 30 seats in the assembly that will write the now-free country's constitution.
