Activist blames EU for harming Turkey's reform efforts

18 October 2011 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
A leading member of Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused some EU member countries of assuming a hostile approach to Turkey's EU membership bid.

Emma Sinclair-Webb, Turkey researcher at the New York-based HRW, joined a debate held on Monday at the European Parliament's subcommittee on human rights, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Many EU members have been undermining reform efforts in Turkey by approaching its membership hostilely and this situation weakens EU members' influence over Turkey, Sinclair-Webb said, adding that the situation does not help reforms in the field of human rights in Turkey.

Sinclair-Webb, meanwhile, praised Turkey for establishing new units within the EU and justice ministries to implement verdicts by the European Court of Human Rights. Nevertheless, she criticized Turkey for not sufficiently focusing on domestic reforms, Anatolia said.
