Police officer Adem İlkkılıç was first taken to a private hospital in Batman and later transferred to Erciyes University Medical School Hospital in Kayseri after he was declared brain dead. İlkkılıç died hours after he was brought to the hospital by air ambulance.
The terrorist PKK, which has recently been targeting civilians in its attacks, killed Mizgin Doru (35), who was eight months pregnant, and her 6-year-old daughter, Sultan Doru. Immediately after the attack doctors were able to save Doru's unborn baby, but the infant also died early on Wednesday.
İlkkılıç was among three policemen who were injured in the attack. PKK attacks on police officers have seen an increase over the past two years, in particular as police operations have increased against the Kurdish Communities Union (KCK), the urban arm of the PKK. The PKK has also been targeting civilians in terrorist attacks with nearly 20 civilians having been killed by the PKK in the past few months.
