26 September 2011 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Stray bullets from celebratory shots fired into the air killed one child and injured five others in a number of similar but unrelated incidents in the provinces of Malatya, Kırıkkale and Sakarya on Sunday.

During pre-wedding celebrations in the village of Çamlıca in Kırıkkale's Bahşılı district a stray bullet killed 8-year-old Enes Kaçar and injured the groom, Oğuzhan Özbek, 21. According to news reports, Kaçar was killed by a stray bullet fired by an unknown person while on the way to a henna night celebration. The same bullet that killed the young boy also hit the groom in the cheek.

Kaçar was rushed to Kırıkkale State Hospital following the incident, but despite doctors' efforts he did not survive. Özbek was admitted to the intensive care unit of Kırıkkale Teaching and Research Hospital.

The gendarmerie has taken security measures in the vicinity of the village.

In an unrelated incident on the same night in Kırıkkale's Gündoğdu district, Zeynep Özcan, 16, was shot in the hip while she and her family were travelling to a wedding. Özcan was immediately taken to a hospital and successfully underwent emergency surgery.

The young girl's parents, Mine and Cevdet Özcan, made a statement that their daughter almost died. They pleaded for people not to fire guns at random and to stop the needless deaths and injuries of innocent people.

In a third unrelated incident on Sunday, pump rifles fired into the air injured two people in the village of Dışdedeler in Sakarya province late on Sunday. The victims, Ali Furkan Doğan, 9, and Şengül Doğan, 23, were admitted to Sakarya Teaching and Research Hospital where both remain in critical condition.

The gendarmerie has launched an investigation into the incident.

A fifth person was injured on the same night in another unrelated shooting incident when a 67-year-old woman was shot during wedding celebrations in Malatya's Akçadağ district.

Bassey Han sustained life-threatening injuries when she was shot in the knee and abdomen by a man who began firing at random. She was rushed by a medical response team to Malatya State Hospital for treatment.

The gendarmerie has launched an investigation into the incident and a suspect has been arrested.
