Şanlıurfa to offer new experiences to museum lovers

26 September 2011 / RAUF MALTAŞ, ŞANLIURFA
Şanlıurfa, one of the oldest cities in the world, over the weekend opened two museums of a new style – namely “kitchen” and “music” museums -- in order to showcase its rich cuisine and musical heritage.

Yasin's Coffee House, known by residents as “the heart of music” for being a regular gathering place for much of the city's vocal talent, has recently been restored and renovated and was opened to the public on Sunday. The municipality chose to name the museum the İbrahim Tatlıses Music Museum after İbrahim Tatlıses, the most famous singer to come out of Şanlıurfa.

City official İsmail Altungöz said that a museum of this type should have been opened a long time ago to inform visitors and future generations alike about city's rich musical past. He stated: “We will feature representations of the 11 most-known singers [from Urfa] at the museum as well as the biographies, works and records of all musicians from the area. Visitors can access the 256 GB-collection from our music archives.”

Visitors to the museum will find a collection of vintage radios, records and old musical instruments as well as the ability to preview songs through a computerized system. There will also be a display of figures posed in dance.

Musical works by other famous singers of Şanlıurfa such as Tenekeci Mahmut, Mukkım Tahir, Kazancı Bedih, Nuri Sesigüzel, in addition to those of Tatlıses, will be displayed at the museum.

Kitchen Museum

The Şanlıurfa Municipality, in an effort to preserve unique traditional and historical flavors and methods of food preparation from the province, opened a kitchen museum in conjunction with its music museum on Saturday.

City official Musa Demirkol commented that the Hacıbanlar House, which has been renovated to host the museum and is one of the most beautiful examples of traditional architecture in the city, opened on Saturday as the Traditional Kitchen Museum, serving local food to visitors throughout the day.

The museum features exhibits such as a tandoor – a large stone oven in which a substantial volume of food can be cooked -- a dining room and a bridal room, which also gives visitors an opportunity to explore the city's traditional cultures.

Demirkol explained that the museum intends to feature local cuisine and will operate in part as a restaurant at some point in the future.

Museums supported by government

Şanlıurfa Governor Eşref Fakıbaba stated that these projects will add to the texture of the city and expressed gratitude to the government for its assistance in helping museum development go smoothly.

Fakıbaba added that the city “will be building more museums such as a city museum, an archeology museum and a mosaics museum in the next two years, which will enhance the city enormously. There isn't any reason for Şanlıurfa not to be one of the notable cities in the country because it deserves to be recognized for its rich history and culture as well as its warm people.”

Halepli Bahçe, the location at which mosaics depicting war and hunting scenes of Amazon queens have been found, is the future site of these new museums to be built within the next two years.
